Finned Tube Heat Exchangers

Submitted by: Jeyakumar J

Finned tube heat exchangers are mainly used for the heating of drinking or heating water and as tankless water heaters. They are also suitable for heating or cooling other liquids. Fins are basically external surfaces on tube for increasing the surface area of the bare tube, resulting in a compact Heat Exchanger. The method of attaching the fins over tube is of prime importance, since even a slightest air gap between the tube and fins will defeat the whole purpose of fins over the tube.Considering the above facts Heft has indigenously designed and developed a special purpose tube fining machine capable of producing following types of finned tubes. When the heat transfer coefficient on the outside of the tube is significantly lower than the heat transfer coefficient on the inside of the tube, there is a major advantage to incorporate fins on the outside tube surface to take full advantage of the high heat transfer rate on the inside of the tube.By using a finned tube with eight times as much surface on the outside of the tube, the total length of the tube required for heating the viscous oil can be reduced by one sixth, Fins are basically external surface on tube for increasing the surface area of the bare tube, resulting in a compact heat exchanger.

Finned Tube Heat Exchangers Advantages:

1. Option of compact design through high thermal conductivity of copper in combination with optimised heat transfer surface

2. Proven corrosion resistance of copper materials for drinking water, particularly chloride-containing wate

3. Copper a hygienic and antimicrobial material for use indrinking water storage

4. Exchangeable via compact coil design

5. Standard WRW heat exchangers available from stock

6. Can be adapted to your individual requirements as necessary

We manufacture this by a special process in which a continuous strip of fin material is wound spirally on the tube, making it strong to withstand high internal pressure. The usage of finned tubes gives heat uniformly and increases the heat output depending upon the height of fins per unit length employed. Finned pipe are used within shell and tube type heat exchangers to enhance the heat transfer between the inside of the heat exchanger tube or pipe, and the outside. Finned pipes and tubes are commercially available in various sizes and materials. Custom finned tubes and pipes are also available. We manufacture finned tubes in various combinations of materials

Finned Tube heat exchangers Material:

Mild steel, carbon steel, stainless steel, copper, brass, etc. These can be manufactured in maximum length of 6 meters along with outside diameter of pipe ranging from 6 to 73mm and the fining can be controlled from 2 to 9 fins per inch. We can manufacture finned tubes in U Bend, Coil & Straight lengths. The Fin size ranges from 4mm to 30mm.

Design of Finned Tube Heat Exchangers:

The design of finned-tube heat exchangers requires specification of more than a dozen parameters, including but not limited to the following: transverse tube spacing, longitudinal tube spacing, tube diameter, number of tube rows, fin spacing, fin thickness, and fin type (plain or enhanced). A schematic of a 4-row coil, along with some of the nomenclature. The broken lines indicate the separation of parallel flow paths on the water-side, herein called circuits. Circuiting is another important specification that will affect performance of a finned-tube heat exchanger.
